Landcape architect John Claudius Loudon was born on his family's farm in Scotland, and studied chemistry, botany, and agriculture at the University of Edinburgh. He began working as a landscape planner in Scotland and England, published numerous influential articles, and founded and edited several periodicals; about this time he was permanently weakened by rheumatic fever. Merchant and printer. Published the New York Packet (1776) at New York City and (1777-1783) at Fishkill, New York. As state printer he printed the first New York State Constitution (Fishkill, 1777); also several issues of state paper money.
